The District was approached by the Sedgwick Museum to assist in its aspiration to create a digital resource on evolution for a target audience with diverse knowledge of the subject. Taking its name from Douglas Adams’s answer to the meaning of life, the universe and everything (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), the project required branding, the development of a visual toolkit and a website.
The identity is built with a Mobius Strip, which reflects the endlessness of evolutionary possibility. The way the marque twists and turns to reveal the number 42 gives it a playful mobility, especially for moving image. The main user interface promotes exploration over handfeeding of information. The tessellated structure presents a canvass of content which invites the visitor to navigate intriguing images and reading content, all underpinned by a seamless grid structure.
Evolutionary studies are divided into three areas: here & now, near horizons and far horizons. Within a couple of clicks a user can navigate to anywhere on the site and, after experiencing their desired content, be presented with other areas of interest to explore. These options for further exploration are generated by an algorithm in the back end of the site which ties subjects areas together directly and indirectly.
As our understanding of the project progressed we introduced additional sections to give the site more shareable properties, such as an interactive careers page, an idiosyncratic Q&A section and a series of diverting films with prominent evolutionists. The resulting site has delivered a unique resource for the museum which furthers its commitment to opening up its areas of interest to a global audience beyond academia.
