The Cambridge Science Centre initiative is working towards establishing a highly interactive permanent public science centre in Cambridge, UK. Currently it is a ‘virtual’ centre made up of a diverse group of individuals including scientists, engineers, artists and business people. Every year the city of Cambridge holds a Festival of Ideas. As part of this year’s festival, the Cambridge Science Centre team presented a one-day interactive science centre. The development of science ‘events’ is central to their communications strategy. Our challenge was to put this science centre without a home, on the map.
Our response, which was informed by conversations undertaken whilst the original idea was being shaped, was to develop a brand identity that not only expressed in a coherent way the centre’s values and proposition, but really connected emotionally with the diverse audiences across all brand touch points. Its role was to inspire and excite people without the benefit of having a physical, tangible space people can touch, feel and smell. The brand will grow over time, in what will be a constantly evolving process.
Beyond the development of the brand identity for the Cambridge Science Centre, we have developed the event specific identity for the Cambridge Science-X-Change and will be involved as further events are planned. This included both materials to promote the events and consultation on event planning and signage. Additionally we are central to the overall communications strategy and ultimately the design and production of all off and online communications. With respect to this project modest budgets needed to be worked to and tight and ever-changing deadlines were hit.
