Dublin born and Cambridge based artist, printmaker and genuinely lovely person Jim Butler has had us all at The District sit for him. Taking inspiration from the inner and outer workings and aesthetics of the studio Jim has drawn with ink and collage to create the beautiful and perceptive collection ‘On Sight’.

He takes his inspiration from the urban environment and draws with ink and collage directly on location. His interests range from architecture, streetscapes and the people who bring cities to life, to shop signs, vernacular typography and raod markings. The cityscape collage drawings on this website are made entirely in situ. Alongside drawing and collage, he works across a range of printmaking techniques, developing the work according to medium. His artist’s books are hand printed and bound by the artist in small editions and these have been bought by many world-leading collections.

His commissioned illustration work has included clients such as The Guardian, Adidas, Siemens, Doire Press and New Island Books. In 2018 he won the World Illustration Award for his artist’s book “Blackrock Sequence”.
