The former barracks and airfield site in Waterbeach village provides an opportunity to develop thousands of new homes on the A10 corridor into Cambridge. The MoD appointed master developer Urban&Civic, the group responsible for the Olympic Village at Stratford, to realise the potential of this space and deliver into Cambridgeshire’s commitment to increasing housing provision.

The identity celebrates the military heritage (an aspect taken to the heart of the local population) while reflecting a forward-looking vision for lakeside-living. Spatial design for the public consultation event required the curation of eight zones – conveniently marked out by the halves of existing badminton courts – with a simple naming device: A Connected Place, A Living Place, A Growing Place, etc. A modular system of plywood cubes and cuboids responds to the constructed nature of the development and a commitment to using renewable materials, delivering contextual information while generating interest and a desire to explore the event.
